Change II
In February of
2000, FCAC developed a program to assist women in need preparing
to enter and compete in the workforce.
Prior to this effort FCAC participated regularly in the
“Suited for Change” program that served women in the broader metropolitan area.
Princess Powell
McEvilley and Josephine Rutledge of FCAC envisioned an opportunity
to focus similar efforts in a more local area, and identified the
Embry Rucker Shelter as a potential partner that would serve women
in need in Fairfax. The
two took steps to create the alliance and shaped the program. FCAC members participated and as a result, the chapter and
Embry Rucker Shelter have an enduring relationship.
To date, over 100 women have benefited from Change II.
The program falls under the Program Planning and Development
arm of FCAC.
Embry Rucker is a
transitory shelter for men and women whose clients live at the
shelter for an average of 90 days. FCAC solicits and contributes
clean professional clothing, toiletries and other items to women
affiliated with the shelter.
In addition, FCAC
facilitates and delivers presentations throughout the year and
partners with the clients to provide a context for applying their
new skills in the workplace. FCAC members also provide childcare services during the
presentations, allowing the participants to focus on the sessions.
FCAC members draw on their professional
expertise and contacts within the community to prepare and present
workshop topics.
