Mercedes Bent

W.T. Woodson High School

Congratulations to Mercedes Bent, a $3,000 Fairfax County Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Scholarship recipient.  Mercedes Bent is a 2006 graduating senior of W. T. Woodson High School in Fairfax, Virginia. Mercedes is President of the school's service oriented Key Club and a National Achievement Scholarship Finalist.  She also is active in the school’s chorus, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, and the Varsity Math team. She has played club soccer since age seven and is on her school’s Varsity Soccer team. She has also served as Treasurer of the teen group of the Burke-Fairfax chapter of Jack and Jill for the last 2 years. Mercedes studied the piano and flute for several years. She is also a church acolyte.

Mercedes created a website for her Key Club to facilitate circulation of information and improve communication.  She organized a Hurricane Katrina fundraiser, has done volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity and has extensive volunteer/community service work in her resume.

Mercedes plans to study economics and computer science.  She dreams of combining her passion for service with technology in a business that will improve the daily lives of people globally.

Mercedes applied to the following schools: Duke, Harvard, The University of Virginia, Stanford, Yale and The College of William and Mary.
