Joyce Green
2005-2006
The Delta of the Year award is
given annually in the Fairfax County Alumnae Chapter (FCAC) to
honor a dynamic Delta who has demonstrated a significant
commitment to the chapter and has gone above and beyond the call
of Delta. FCAC is very proud to honor Soror Joyce Elizabeth
Steney Green as Delta of the Year for the
sorority year 2005-2006.
Soror Joyce E. Green, a native
of Jacksonville, Florida, is the second of three girls born to
the late Mr. & Mrs. Roosevelt Steney. She was educated in the
public schools of Jacksonville, Florida. She graduated with
greater distinction from Florida Agricultural & Mechanical
University with a B.S degree in Mathematics. While attending FAMU Soror Green was a member of the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor
Society, White and Gold Honor Society, Mathematics Club, Women’s
Congress, Student Government Association and the Upward Bound
Program. She earned her Master of Education from George Mason
University. Soror Green is married to Col.
(Ret) James E. Green,
Jr.
They are proud
parents of three adult children, James, Sonya and Annette.
In November 1963, Soror Green
was initiated into Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. at Florida A & M University (FAMU). She served
as the second vice president of the chapter. Soror Green is a
charter member of Fairfax Chapter Alumnae Chapter of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She has made a tremendous
contribution to the sorority and operations of the chapter.
Soror Green has served as chairperson of the Pan-Hellenic and
Finance committees, chapter representative on the Northern
Virginia Pan-Hellenic Council, member of the Audit, Ways and
Means and May Week committees and held the office of Treasurer.
Currently, she serves as chairperson of May Week and Silent
Auction committees, a member of the Ways and Means and Finance
committees and hold the position, Custodian of Funds, for
DREF-FCAC committee.
Soror Green’s professional
career and public service have focus on youth. Soror Green
taught high school mathematics at W. T. Woodson High School in
Fairfax City, Virginia for twenty-five years. While working at
Woodson, Soror Green organized and sponsored and the Cultural
Alliance Club (formerly the Minority Affairs Club); She was the
Lead Mentor Teacher and a member of the Standards of Learning
(SOL) cadre. She presented workshops to teachers throughout the
state of Virginia. She also taught mathematics at Phoenix Union
High School in Tempe, Arizona and worked as a staff
mathematician for the U.S. Army Missile Command, Computation
Center, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.
The professional organizations
to which she has devoted her energies include the National
Educational Association/Virginia Educational Association,
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Alliance
of Black Educators, Benjamin Banneker Association and the
Fairfax County Association of Teachers of Mathematics. Soror
Green retired from Fairfax County School System as one of their
exemplary teachers. She is a member of W.T. Woodson Retired
Teachers Association, Fairfax County Retired Teachers
Association and the Retired Black Educators Association.
Joyce Green is a Christian and
an active member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Fairfax
Station, VA. She is a member of Antioch Usher Board, the Adult
Sunday School Class, the Antioch Youth Tutorial Program and she
is on track to graduate from the Antioch Bible Institute. Soror
Green motto, “I can do all things through Him who Strengthens
me.” (Phil 4:13)
In her spare time she enjoys
making crafts, sewing, bowling and playing cards.
